In the 1930s, an extraordinary building was built in Heerlen: the Glass Palace. It was very modern and innovative for that time. It originally served as a fashion house. Architect Frits Peutz designed the modernist building for entrepreneur Peter Schunck. Due to its height and large glass areas, it was quickly nicknamed 'the Glass Palace'.
A city within a city, built on dreams and steel. The Maankwartier is not just a station area — it is a living work of art that connects Heerlen North and South. Designed by artist Michel Huisman, this district combines architecture, art and city life in a unique way.
In the middle of Pancratius Square is the Saint Pancratius Church, the beating heart of Heerlen for centuries. Built in the 12th century, this Romanesque church is not only a place of reflection, but also a tangible reminder of the city's rich history. The impressive tower from 1394 once served as a defense tower within Landsfort Herle.
